North Rhine-Westphalia and Chinese province intensify collaboration

The Chinese province of Shanxi has opened a German office in Willich and intends to further intensify its cooperation with the Rhine/Ruhr federal state.

Shanxi Province is facing a similarly significant structural change to that experienced by the Ruhr Metropolis a few years ago. For example, approx. 100 million euros are being invested per year in modernization and ecology in the region where about a third of Chinese coal requirements is currently produced. "North Rhine-Westphalia has the technologies, the companies and the experts that can contribute to making this structural change a success," said Economics Minister Harry K. Voigtsberger at the office opening ceremony. "To smooth the path to China for small and medium-sized enterprises in particular, I am delighted that our political efforts have now led to the establishment of a representation of Shanxi Province in North Rhine-Westphalia."

North Rhine-Westphalia and Shanxi Province are linked by a partnership that goes back more than 25 years. Regular entrepreneur trips to Shanxi and participations in trade fairs and symposia have been taking place since 2007. North Rhine-Westphalian companies from the sectors mining and plant engineering, mine safety, mine gas use and coal chemistry are active in Shanxi.
